BACKGROUND
There is dignity in work. By providing a person experiencing homelessness with a job, you offer hope and draw them into the community. That is the simple idea behind City Jobs, an innovative work program first created by the Lamb Center in partnership with Fairfax City, and recently expanded to Fairfax County. The program pays workers $10 an hour to work four-hour shifts twice a week at designated worksites.
For Fairfax City, the program extends the reach of parks and recreation staff enabling the department to improve response time and tackle deferred projects. For the community, the result is safer and more beautiful parks and public spaces, cleaner streams, fewer invasive plants, extended leaf collection, faster snow removal, and additional tree plantings.
On October 2, 2019, the program doubled in size through a pilot partnership with the Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Service. The county program, called Operation Stream Shield, sends Lamb Center crews out twice a week collecting debris and other refuse that would otherwise pollute local waterways. County crews also stop the spread of invasive plant species.
The Lamb Center’s goal for both programs is to help individuals graduate to a full-time or part-time job, in conjunction with housing opportunities. Open to all Lamb Center guests, the city and county programs include those struggling with mental illness, intellectual disabilities, addiction and/or a criminal record.
Once an individual has worked ten consecutive days, a recommendation letter is written for them to give to prospective employers. Once graduated, they understand that their conduct as an employee impacts the reputation of the program and the opportunity for future workers to gain employment. There are currently approximately 100 individuals registered for either the city or county program.
The Lamb Center values its civic partnerships, and the support of Holy Trinity. It’s an approach that not only uplifts those who need help, but benefits the entire community through cleaner, healthier parks, and waterways.
